Greetings! The January 2012 issue is now online!

2012 brings a new look to Southwest Flair. We will have a layout that reflects the fresh, clean look and feel of a print magazine rather than just a standard web layout. Articles and back issues will be catagorized by both date and subject, making it easier than ever to find what you are looking for and much more! Suggestions for similar articles will also appear for assistance in guiding you to other articles of interest that you won't want to miss.

There is now an option to leave a comment below each article allowing you to interact with our team, ask a question or share your ideas. There will be "like" and "share" buttons so that you may easily let you your Facebook Friends in on all the Southwest news that you enjoy.

In the meantime, we appreciate your patience as we make this transition but everything will remain in its place until it is complete so that you will not miss a single bit of content. Makeup Hound - Eco-friendly, health-friendly cosmetics

Admittedly, I am a makeup hound. I like to buy and try, and inevitably this includes many purchases that were "mistakes" from the word go. This is occurring more increasingly due to the attractive new product packaging, “green” marketing, and product “dress-up” that has evolved in recent years to reach the consumer who is concerned for the earth, the environment, the animals, her body, and what she puts on or in it.

The new packaging, new multi-colored artistic-looking palettes of color expertly blended to look like the earth or swirls of color in a kaleidoscope, are uniquely appealing to the eye and the artistic senses. Mascara wands with plastic green leaves on the handle, compacts made from renewable bamboo, mineral makeups; it’s a big list of attractive products, so many in fact that it is impossible to keep up with, especially as new smaller cosmetic companies pop up every day. It is hard to know anymore which is reliable, which is just another scam on the bandwagon. When I began using beauty products (too many years ago to say), there were X amount of cosmetic companies that had been around for an acceptable and established amount of time whose products we knew and relied upon. Though most of these companies are still around, the market has become flooded with new “eco-friendly” or “celebrity-endorsed” companies and their products making it difficult to choose.

Many of the smaller companies can indeed offer products true to their campaigning in regard to being eco-friendly, etc., because they may have lower costs and overhead, one owner whose integrity is in charge that may be making company and product decisions based on a “vision” for the betterment of product and customer satisfaction. Larger cosmetic companies may have a more difficult time doing this due to costs, investors, board members, stock-holders, etc.

Today I tried a new bamboo bronzer from Bamboo Wear/Physicians Formula that I have been waiting months and months on which finally showed up at a local store, but after all that waiting I was not so impressed with the powder itself as with the company, product, packaging and ingredients overall. Sure we can tell if something feels good on our skin or not, or if it breaks us out or doesn’t do its job but chances are if we had a line of bronzers or pressed powders in front of us, stripped of their labels, we might be hard-pressed to select the best product for both our self and the environment.

The Bamboo Wear Compact and Brush Set is very attractive and appealing and includes a place for the bronzer or powder, a mirror and tiny bamboo and natural hair brush. The compact is made in a way that rather than snapping open as do most, slides open in a twisting, sliding way and is held in place when closed by small magnets. This may or may not stay closed in my bag as other items bump against it and the bag bumps against me. Because of the twist-sliding opening, the lid grazes the top of the powder just a bit causing some of it to loosen prematurely so this is a consideration in switching to this product with this type of opening and closing. Perhaps they will realize this and correct it in the near future.

The bronzer itself is really a mere piece of face candy, certainly not a necessity in one’s daily regimen.

Whatever the product, in order to be environmentally safe, as well as safe to our skin, we have to make sacrifices in some areas of what we are accustomed to as far as quality because without chemicals or synthetics, natural products are simply different and require adjusting to. Kind of like when you switch to green tea from good old iced tea or from easy processed frozen waffles to homemade healthy buckwheat batter. It’s just different and requires some getting used to as well as rearranging or re-establishing some priorities, one being: do I want to sacrifice product quality for eco-friendliness? No, not really, most of us do not. We will say that we will but when it comes to our vanity it can be a thin line that we are not always willing to draw and step behind. The only way to truly now how far we will go, what we will sacrifice, is to try these new products. And I only just got it so I am not going to make any decisions just yet as to the quality of the bronzer itself until I have used it enough to know its effectiveness or lack of.

I love these new things! I would love to tell you to run out buy them if they are worth the value they offer. With the little bamboo compact, it is cute, it is a novelty, but it is also NOT made of plastic, can be re-filled again and again, IS made from a renewable, sustainable substance that will not be detrimental to the planet if and when it is discarded, and the bronzers and powders that fill it are highly sustainable, nutrient-rich and also made from bamboo and additionally they are hypoallergenic, fragrance free, paraben free, dermatologist approved, non-comedogenic, and oil-free.

And as a side-note, I also just tried the new Grow Luscious Mascara from Fabulash/Revlon and it is nowhere near Fabulash and it flakes a bit when dried. I really don’t think they need to improve; Fabulash is the best mascara on the market, why not just stay with that? BUT it’s packaged in a pretty green color and has the word “grow” in its name, all relating to the subconscious of the new “green” consumer.

So what’s all this new look, new packaging worth? Some is good for you and the environment, some isn’t, some work, some don't. With our accesss now to product information there is no reason we need to keep making needless purchases withot being informed. Unless you too are a makeup hound and have to try it, give it a bit, do your research, check with your favorite reliable reviewers and then decide if it’s worth the investment because many of these new eco-friendly lines are fairly expensive (as are most cosmetics in general) and we need to be fully informed before we invest in making the switch.

I think we will all agree that we are glad that March has arrived with its warmer days and spring fashions, sunshine and seedlings to plant.

Though it is still cold and snowy in some areas of the southwest and a good thing it is for Aspen Fashion Week as once again they hit the runway slopes bringing the latest in ski attire. For warmer days, we're taking a look at the newest clothing line by Adam Jacobs at Barbara's Boutique in Scottsdale, classic and trendy to compliment any southwest lifestyle as seen in this month's lovely cover photo. Dallas celebrity couturier designer Oscar Fierro will be showcasing his fall 2011 collection for the first time this month in Dallas, along with Linda Rowe Thomas of the Romẚs Label, one of New York Fashion Week's newest design talents, who will showcase the Romẚs Fall 2011 collection inspired by Godiva chocolatier. We'll also go green with Ivy at her eco-chic boutique that has recently opened at the Borgata of Scottsdale.

We also have spring clothing and makeup tips, cute southwest shoe-finds, funky finds, a review of Donna Karan's Cashmere Mist, and a continued discussion on Finishing Touches, this month on developing your own personal style.

In cuisine we'll take a peek at Luminario's new executive chef, Matt Ostrander, at Santa Fe's favorite Inn and Spa at Loretto.

In many cases a good cleaning or a little TLC are all that is needed to spice up what is otherwise a perfectly good piece that can save you hundreds of dollars off retail as well as give you a real earthy, southwest feel.

It's February, that means spring is just over the horizon! It also means Valentine's and chocolate time!

We have an issue full of inspirational and exciting news to kick off the 2011 editorial year. As you may have noticed, I was on hiatus in January and am so glad to be back at the helm preparing for the upcoming year; its fashions, the events, and so much more!

I am very excited to introduce my new line of scarves in this month's issue. Hand-crocheted with a special signature design for Southwest Flair, they will add just the right touch of southwestern style to your wardrobe.

We are also introducing a new monthly column, Finishing Touches, to offer guidance on developing a personal or professional look of polish and finishing. This month's article serves as the opener and beginning next month will be accompanied by a video segment when we begin on wardrobe.

We also have a fashion event from Lily Vasaelini in Dallas, Recycled fashions in Utah, a follow up on the exciting and successful partnership from Over40Females and Arizona Model and Actor Management as they began their networking and model search in Scottsdale, and some beautiful have-to-have fashions in the upcoming ArtFeast Fashion Show in Santa Fe later this month, which you won't want to miss.

An Editorial - Dressing Well: A lost art?

What’s in, what’s out? Has self-expression overtaken self-dignity? Has the freedom in fashion overstepped acceptable boundaries? Bra straps showing with spaghetti-strap tops, flip-flops with clothing other than beach-wear? Designers pushing the limits to “punk up” the market?

Granted, fashion has long been about fad but it’s also about looking tops, high-end, chic, polished, put-together, and in today’s world, looking tops seems to be “old-hat” for anyone who wants to be in. Anything goes and the art of dressing well may have gone out the door with it. It’s not just young women and it’s not just in fashion; in a free-for-all society, traditional behaviors like oh say, manners, among other things like dressing well, good grooming, good posture, have all but evaporated. This loss, from dressing well to elbows on tables, reflects a loss of values. In the sixties, the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, set the pace for style and grace inspiring a rage of Jackie look-a-likes. In the eighties it was Madonna and the black bra strap has remained an acceptable aberration since on a snowball’s ride from there. Do our values reflect our favorite celebrities or do our favorite celebrities reflect our values?

I myself am not without influence from celebrities: in the sixties, it was Twiggy, in the seventies, Cher and Cheryl Tiegs; in the eighties it was a broader range moving from Joan Jett to Stevie Nicks, but finally, to me. We’re all influenced by women in the media and of celebrity status and we all struggle to incorporate what we like as well as what society promotes and accepts, into our own unique style and image.

What criteria define well-dressed? The answer to that probably depends on whom you ask; however, there are ideals that should hold up throughout the evolution of fashion and society. Some would say quality, but is the quality really a factor if the individual has a sense of personal style as well as a sense of what works in general and what doesn’t? Putting it all together with a sense of good taste may really be the bottom line. Good taste? It flows, it works, it does not repel, it enhances beauty, it invokes an “ah” as does a sunset.

Much of today’s so-perceived fashionable image is based on sex-appeal rather than good taste. Men have disclosed to me on more than one occasion that truthfully it is more desirable to leave a little to the imagination. Tacky is tacky, and I don’t think any amount of generations past, present or future, can change that. Bra straps are bra straps and flip-flops are flip flops.

America has done its best to raise its youth but several generations now of youth raised by day-care centers have suffered the loss of teaching and influences from home. No time in the mornings to hang out and play dress up while mom is getting dressed for the day because mom had to be out the door at seven-fifteen in order to drop baby at day-care and get to work on time. No time to emulate the femme-couture or to get a quick tip on makeup application or to learn which shoes go with which outfit. By junior high and high school, the girls are dressing and getting to school on their own and mom may not even see them until after work, by which time clothes have been changed, makeup has worn off, neither seeing what the other is projecting. Finishing schools are out, home-ec classes are for nerds.

The increase of clothing purchases now made through discount stores and outlets as well as online and catalog shopping, may have also contributed to the loss of dressing well. As stores became larger and larger and customers grew in number, the days of seeking out expert assistance from an experienced clerk or boutique-owner, have all but disappeared. These opportunities from smaller, more personal shops offered instruction and assistance in selecting clothes best-suited for the client. Though still available in select boutiques, usually designer, this is no longer a shopping option for the masses when making purchases.

Another serious contributor to the lost art of dressing well may also be the fact that over sixty-percent of Americans are overweight. Though there is recent indication of a trend in more stylish clothing for larger women, it is still not common and not available in mass quantities for the American mainstream shopper. Clothes for the heavier/overweight person are not the most attractive. Thus, the majority of American people are stuck with the fashions available to fit their size and this lack of selection has resulted in the loss of the ability to dress well. Perhaps more and more clothing manufacturers will take notice and begin to provide more fashionable options for their customers of weight, but hopefully, Americans will take notice of this not only unnecessary, but unhealthy trend, and return to a consciousness that includes healthy diet and lifestyle.

All of these situations offered the teaching and influence of the art of dressing well to society. Our society is more relaxed today and with that, our clothing and appearance has relaxed too, and relaxed can be great, and comfortable and easy and affordable. Jeans are probably man’s best invention next to maybe the bathtub! It’s how to wear those jeans and with what that is key. Jeans, business attire, casual dress, evening-wear, can all look great, or, can look hideous. Don’t we all want to look our best?

How do we re-instill the art of dressing well into a society that has gone from center-stage to back-stage attire? We in the media have a responsibility to share, to teach, to encourage, to inspire and most importantly, to demonstrate. Everyone has the right to be themself whether mother, daughter, friend, or colleague and whether at work, at school, in leisure or otherwise. But we also have a responsibility to ourselves to be our best and to look our best, because if we take pride in ourselves and our appearance, others will take pride in us too and we will then earn the respect we seek. Every generation has their style, their particular form of rebellion (which usually takes form through dress and music), and as we have seen through decades of fashion, what goes around, comes around. Might it be time now to return to the art of dressing well?

It's Chile Time in New Mexico!

Chiles are available in New Mexico year round but if you want fresh-roasted, still warm, home-grown chiles, now is the time and New Mexico is the place!

A traditional meal of enchiladas, topped with guacamole, becomes a complete dining experience with the addition of a margarita and a sunny outdoor setting. Foods that have developed within the Land of Enchantment are distinctly different from the fare commonly called "Mexican food" or "Tex-Mex." The dishes most closely identified with New Mexico reflect a blend of Hispanic and Indian cultures, and a use of locally grown ingredients including blue corn and green chiles. Virtually all Southwestern dishes make use of four main ingredients: the tortilla, pinto bean, cheese and chile. The different chile choices have led to New Mexico to become the only state with an official question:
“Red or green?”

All across the state the mouth-watering aroma of New Mexico chiles roasting outdoors is almost more than a chile-lover can take. From super-market parking lots to roadside stands, to farmers' markets, chiles are roasting here and are ready to take home. I just purchased my first batch of the season; still warm, and ready to add to my favorite recipe, which this evening will be cheese enchiladas.

Already Fall Shopping and Found the Coolest Faux Fur Vest

Finally it is September 1st! Summer is over, though not officially, but in my book. A good day for new starts perhaps and that includes new fall clothes and I have waited as long as I can wait! I am ready to shop and ready to blog to bring you whatever hits the mark to adding a little Southwest Flair to our wardrobes. I don't shop in spring, I don't shop in summer, I don't shop in winter, I save it all up for fall!

As I mentioned in this month's editorial, fur seems to be really in this fall, and since most of us can't afford Chanel (see their fall collection in the Sept. Vogue; it's a bit over the top, ok, it's way over the top, but within reason a piece here and there isn't out of the question), I found a great little piece today that will fit right in and that is this too cool Fossil Emma faux fur vest. cropped, faux fur, the Emma Vest instantly punches up even your most casual t-shirt and jeans. Another Perfect Hair Day!

A perfect hair day and all is right in the world. Just came away from the dressing room with perfect hair. I don't know if you're like me but there are only a few things that can ruin my day faster than anything, that is bad hair, getting a fever blister and tangled coat-hangers. The hair problem has at least been solved.

The surge of mineral makeups onto the market in the last few years has given us as cosmetic consumers even more to ponder: which to buy, which is right for me, what to look for, how to know, what is safe, what works, the questions are almost endless.

Personally I tend to avoid trends so if it’s plastered everywhere, I am skeptical until the dust settles, or as was in this case, until the minerals settled. I have worn cosmetics heavily in former fashion modeling and stage work and I have spent years in a more natural state as a mom raising my kids, and in my concern for both my health and the environment, have been somewhat “picky” in my return to the cosmetic realm.

In recent years the mineral marketing would on occasion catch my eye and peak my interest. With a strong love of the earth and geology, or the study of it, minerals, gemstones, and all things natural, I was even more intrigued, and given my love of makeup products, it had become a struggle to integrate the two. Then a few years ago I began using the Organicwear from Physician’s Formula and really liked the blusher, bronzer and loose powder. Though not mineral wear, they were a stepping stone for me. They were natural and I liked the coverage and feel.

Still I began wanting to try the new minerals makeup. I, however, have dry skin, and in my ignorance figured that a powder foundation simply would not work for me. I could not have been more wrong.

After recently becoming an Avon rep, I continued trying other foundations and lines from Avon. I thought I was sold on the whipped mousse foundation. I have never liked liquids. Mousse seemed it would be the best for my dry skin. I had been through a full container and it was time to re-order but I ordered another liquid in another line wanting to try as many as I can so I know what to recommend. I also though demo-ed a new Smooth Minerals Pressed Foundation thinking maybe to use it is a powder over the liquid.

I tried the other line of liquid which was not for me, though I used it about a week and finally in frustration remembered that the other I had ordered was not a powder but a foundation. I’ll try it alone I thought. Amazing! I always moisturize first so of course I moisturized, then applied a bit of concealer and finally the pressed mineral foundation. The application and coverage was again, amazing. I was never so surprised. It was like putting on a regular foundation but without the heaviness, without the pasty feel, and it actually felt smooth, smoother than my skin has ever felt and covered better than I would have ever imagined.

It stays all day and evening. As long as I have been using foundation, more years than I care to say, I have had to touch up at least once in the afternoon, and of course again in the evening if going out. Avon’s Smooth Minerals Pressed Foundation as well as the Smooth Minerals Blush, stays looking great until I am ready to take it off and go to bed. Amazing is simply the only word at the risk of being redundant.

Also I am a redhead and I have freckles. With a light/medium skintone, freckles, dark hair, brows and eyes, finding the right shade has always been a challenge. My husband would say it’s too light or it’s too dark but with the Smooth Minerals from Avon he actually said, “It looks great!”

I have spent hours of researching comparable products as well as both the benefits and potential hazards of traditional and mineral foundations and I must say I stand with Avon. Many cosmetic companies online do not list or offer the product ingredients, Avon does, the ingredient list is a click away from any product in a pop-up window. They are as close to being “true” mineral products than I found with any other major lines and that is only due to one ingredient: bismuth oxychloride, which though a mineral, is not found in nature, it is a by-product of copper and lead refinement but is used by some companies as a filler. It is also used in the bareMinerals brand and they seem to be the most popular. I also spent time reading most every customer review on these products and most customers compared to the bareMinerals line and were more satisfied with quality, coverage, feel, wear and price. I cannot speak enough good about it and I have done my homework and over one- hundred reviewers all felt the same way. They, nor I, will never go back to a liquid and will never use anything else. The Perfect Valentine

What is the perfect Valentine? I think if I could choose, the evening Julia Roberts had in Pretty Woman when they flew to San Francisco for the opera would be a nice starting point--- A walk on a beach in Greece at sunset might be another. But we don't get out much. In past years I haven't even given Valentine's much thought; after twenty years of marriage and three teenagers later, well, you know how that story goes.

But this year I find myself thinking I would like to do something special for that special someone. I think it is more difficult to come up with special ideas for guys than it may be for guys to come up with for women, (guys you may correct me if I'm wrong and I may very well be), just like it's easier to shop for a woman than for a man, and I am trying to come up with something that comes from a place within rather than from a gift shop.

I could run to the shopping center, I could prepare a special dinner, but neither quite convey the message of how special someone is; neither can convey the unsaid, the intimate, the deeply simplistic knowing that without that person your world would crumble and life as you prefer it would end. How on earth do you convey that? I have about thirty-six hours to figure this out, I've had twenty years, and with each passing year it grows even harder to convey.

Perhaps it is just to share, and to know that on that special day the sun will set and we will have shared one more beautiful day. To be aware of this day, to be here now, to revel in the senses, in the sensual presence of that special someone. A look, a touch, a smile, an embrace, the mingling of breath, and knowing as always that we are one.

Save Those Cotton Balls

Recently I watched one of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s PBS shows in which he was talking about how when his kids threw away a tube of toothpaste he would retrieve it because it still had maybe six more squeezes in it. He then stated that this came from his upbringing in a depression mentality.

Being raised by my grandparents, who were also of the depression era, I realized that my grandmother was recycling before it was likely even a term. She saved everything from bread wrappers (to use as plastic bags) to jars and jelly glasses (which we had out the ears) to what few plastic containers she did buy. For one thing, we burned our own trash and though some would say we were polluting the air, at least there was very little to go to a landfill maybe once every six months, about the only things that were hauled off were tin cans which I think is commendable considering the amount of trash that leaves every home in America on a daily basis.

I recall one precious commodity that would always entreat the phrase, “ . . . and don’t throw that cotton away,” when opening a new bottle of aspirin or such. Cotton was an item of luxury she could not afford and was always needed of course for dabbing on medicine or alcohol or simply removing nail polish. So whenever we opened a new bottle of something with cotton stuffed in it, we saved that cotton.

Little was ever wasted. Food scraps went to the dogs, wilted lettuce and old bread to the birds outdoors while fruit, watermelon rinds and the like, went to the horses.

Though I have not always been as eco-conscious as I should have, I was fortunate to be raised with a mind to pay attention to packaging and little extras that could be saved and used again rather than thrown away and I always feel guilty to this day when I do toss out something that would have been regarded as useful, fully knowing that I may likely turn around and pay money for the same product later in its own container like baggies or cotton balls. Though their reasons may have been due more to money verses our concern today for the environment, the results are the same. By being more conscious consumers we can not only help the environment but also save a little money.

Oh What a Tangled Web

As you can see there is now a Facebook Badge placed on my blog---this has been a journey. I began this morning before breakfast building a Facebook profile for Southwest Flair. Winding my way then through links to Twitter, then Blogger, back to Facebook, adding a link to my online Avon shopping, and now it's time for dinner. What a crazy web it is and all connected!

I have been using the web since its inception however that has also made me a dinosaur (at least I felt like one today) in trying to use these new applications (was very close to calling the teen-agers for help!) But I will get there and Southwest Flair will weave its way into all of the doors available to us so that we may bring all of our monthly goodies and updates to readers everywhere! You'll never have trouble getting into a pair of jeans again!

Today's tip: Have trouble getting those skinnies or Wranglers up after a bath?

We wear our jeans pretty often out here in the Southwest and the one thing I have never liked about using after-bath lotions is that it is then very hard to get into a pair of jeans afterward, the tighter the jeans, the harder to get them on. NOT SO with SKIN SO SOFT Mineral Gems Luminous Pearl Gelled Body Oil! Jeans glide on like silk over the skin! No struggling, no wriggling, to pulling, no tugging! This is a bonus not to mention how great your skin feels! Try it and you will love it!

At first try of this product, I wasn't sure about it, it seemed I could barely tell the difference but I had used only a tiny bit. I mistakingly thought becuase it is oil-based that was all I should use. The next time I tried it, I really (don't know if this is a word) slathered it on, using very generous amounts all over. It was wonderful, luxurious, fantastic! And I was able to slip right into those jeans!

The Proof is in the Pudding

I want to take a minute here to say that the proof is in the pudding. I try a lot of skin care and beauty products but since I began using Avon, I have been trying this and that and really watching the results.

Honestly, I have rough, dry skin here in the southwest and in just days after beginning use of the Imari Bath and Shower Gel, the bottoms of my feet and heels were completely softened (the same can be said for the Skin So Soft Bath and Shower Gel). This is quite a feat (pardon the pun), no other product has done this. I was so surprised. And the shower gel is the perfect way to begin the foundation for layering Imari or your favorite scent by following after bath with the matching roll on deodorant, shimmering bath powder and scented body lotion. Another thing I found out is that when using the scented deodorants, not only do they work but when you remove your garment at the end of the day, it smells like Imari or one of the other perfumed scents, and not like perspiration. This is very nice.

Another product I'd like to mention that I am using is the Anew Ultmate Night Cream and it is removing the brown spots. They are fading and getting smaller and less noticeable. It's amazing and so is the way your skin feels not only immediately after application but the next day and if you continue use, every day. It is truly an amazing feeling.

Rejuvenate in January Workshops

The holiday break is over and because many of us are feeling tired and could use a lift, in conjunction with our Rejuvenate in January article, I am offering Rejuvenate in January Workshops focusing on learning about retreating at home, wellness, yoga for healthy skin, and starting a new skin care program. Workshops are available in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Ruidoso, Roswell, Clovis/Portales, Lubbock and Amarillo areas. I will also schedule Dallas/Ft. Worth area workshops for larger groups.

Today at Southwest Flair

There may have to be more than one entry a day. As I mentioned previously, I write all day, and evening. And I am still trying to get the hang of all of this, I feel lost in a sea of blogs and need to see what floats.

Today at Southwest Flair, in addition to trying to blog, I got with the organizers for the Flagstaff Yoga Festival and we plan to do something special for their upcoming summer dates. It is sure to be an outstanding event! Then it was on to talking with the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth about an upcoming piece on the museum and cowgirl fashions, I can't wait! And laying the groundwork for some yogic unions, like weddings!

It's all in a day's work, and so is one of my favorite things to do, testing makeup, skin care and fragrance products. Our elements out here in the southwest are a little different than many other areas so we really need to know what works, and what works well! Drying, chafing, peeling, excessive wrinkling, it's a harsh climate. This time of year our best friend is a beauti-fier, really just a humidifier, but I call it a beauti-fier because it's so effective on the face and skin. Get one, fill it up and plug it in for new skin! And be sure to moisturize face and body with a good skin care system. I am using Avon's Anew Anti-aging regimen and I love it, it feels like I have a new face! Another new product I absolutely love is Bath & Body's Signature Collection, Coconut Lime Verbena Triple Moisture Body Cream, wow, it's great.

Over the holidays I ate at Leal's Mexican restaurant and had the first chicken and sour cream enchiladas with fresh roasted green chiles that I have had in a long time. Leal's has several New Mexico, Texas and I believe Oklahoma locations. They are family run, large, sociable spots with great Mexican food. And since I never get my fill of enchiladas, the other night I picked up a carry out of green chile chicken enchiladas at our local supermarket deli and honest to gosh, they were some of the best I've ever had! Surprise, right there in the supermarket, fresh made with New Mexico goodness, but hey, getting outstanding enchiladas in a supermarket deli is something that can only happen in the southwest and that's another reason I love it here---the food! Now, Red or green?

Let's hope I don't get frost-bitten . . .

It's a cold day in December to be sticking my toes in the waters of this universal blogging pond but since I write all day long anyway, I decided to give it a try.

I will try to stick to our southwest agenda, however, I have a lot of interests and may ramble away at times. I will refrain from telling you what my dog did today or what mood I am in but I will start by telling you that I love what I do, I love Southwest Flair Magazine and that is because I love the southwest. A native Texan, I have been in New Mexico for many years and lived in several different regions of the state. The southwest, along with fashion, have always been my true loves.

In searching the newsstands and the internet for publications that had a focus on my eclectic inerests, I could find none. A few had some articles of interest, others had one here or there, but none that covered it all, you know, southwest style. I want the good stuff: clothing, leather boots, fringe, southwestern art, MOUNTAINS, sunsets, food, decor, oh gosh, it's a long list. So five years ago, I launched Southwest Flair Magazine. At first it covered everything southwest but that seemed a bit much and unfocused so last fall I took the leap and turned our focus to southwest style, heavily on fashion. Our readership doubled so there must be other southwest fashion junkies out there besides me.

And it is an ecclectic style we have here because so many different sub-cultures influence our lives and our fashion: the cowboy way of life, Mexican and Hispanic, hippies, new-agers, artists, scientists, outdoor sports enthusiasts, Native Americans, and even high couture in our larger city centers, and it is quite a fashionable melting pot we have but is what makes southwest style so unique. There is nothing better than stepping off the plane in Albuquerque or Phoenix or sitting on the square in Santa Fe or Taos and people-watching, you will see all kinds and the clothes and jewelry are amazing! What a beautiful, lovely unique mix!

In closing for today, if you have made it this far, I will say that I will do my best to bring you as much as possible of all that makes up southwest style and a little more.

Today's fashion statement: be as creative as possible with your long johns because it's snowing from Arizona to Texas! Until next time . . .
